I don't know about you guys, but Mexican food is hands down my favorite type of food. However, many times it can end up being very fattening with lots of cheese, sour cream, and chips. However, MyPlate.gov teamed up with Goya to provide a free cookbook that has Mexican and Argentinian recipes that are more nutritionally well balanced (and affordable). There are some great recipes for Argentinean Grilled Steak with Salsa Criolla, Quinoa Salad, Chicken Veracruz, and more. You can download the free eBook here. … [Read more...]
Protein Yogurt Recipe
This is my go to mid-morning snack - Protein Yogurt. It's easy to make and delicious. Here are the ingredients: 1 cup non-fat Greek yogurt (I use Trader Joe's Non-Fat Plain Greek Yogurt) 1 scoop protein powder (I'm using Muscle Pharm Combat Powder now because of it's lower carb count) 1/2 cup of wild blueberries (I just get the frozen bag at Trader Joe's) Just put the cup of yogurt in a bowl, and add the scoop of protein powder. How to Eat Well on $4 A Day: Free eBook
One of the things many people say about trying to eat healthy is that it is too expensive. This really not the case. Love them or hate them, Wal-Mart is the largest provider of organic food in the US, and just announced plans to cut their price of their organic food by 25%. (Granted, "organic" doesn't always equal healthy food - an organic chocolate cookie is still a cookie. But you get the idea.) All that said, food studies scholar Leanne Brown has released a free cookbook aimed at those on SNAP (food stamps) that gives meals plans for $4 a day. The cook book has a number of ethnic dishes like Chana Masala as well as old favorites like Black Eyed Peas and Collards. While not all of these are the best recipes for weight loss, cooking at home is cheaper and healthier than eating out. If you're looking for some ideas for some good food on the cheap, this is a great cookbook. Click here to download. … [Read more...]
Review: Lose it!
I've been using the Lose It! App to track my food for the last several weeks. Studies show that keeping a food diary can help you to double your weight loss. I've found it helps me be mindful of what I eat, because I have a tendency to snack a lot, especially at night. When I first started my weight loss journey, I used the Livestrong MyPlate App. It was really one of the best tools I used as it helped me see clearly how many calories I was really eating each day. I attribute this tool to having helped me shed the weight to begin with. Similar to the My Plate app, Lose It! is a food and exercise tracking app. You can manually search for foods, scan bar codes of packaged food, and enter different exercises. But lately, I've been using Lose It because it is easy to use, and has a much better experience on mobile devices verses My Plate app. Lose It does a nice job of storing your foods that you enter for easy searching, since we all tend to eat the same foods over and over. Lose … [Read more...]
